Wonderful tributes to your dogs Paul.
I shall re read them and enjoy them some more.
I am so glad you found Pete . There is nothing worse than not knowing what happened to your best friend.
Many moons ago I lost such a friend. It turns out one of my daughters ex boyfriends was trying to get rid of my dog. The bum was taking him off . But shadow being a smart dog was found by me a couple of times. God smiled on us I guess. Because imagine my surprise to be headed home from work , see a black lab off in the field , watch him run for all he was worth towards my big bright blue van , only to see as he got closer it was my shadow. Many miles from home but now found. Shadow recognized that big blue van and why shouldn't he ? He faithfully met it each day when I came home from work.
But eventually my shadow was gone for good. This time apparently the boyfriend made sure I wouldn't find him. I looked for that dog for months. Ads in the paper, flyers nailed on trees. Called the dog pound and local shelters every other day least they possibly forget I was looking for a black lab named shadow. Bought a ATV so I could look the farm over in places my pick up truck wouldn't go. Never found him and that still plagues me . Nothing worse than having your best friend disappear into think air and not be able to find them. Not knowing if they are being cared for or if they are even alive is more than a person should have to bear.
