Bow-wow-wow! Encarta's Dog Quiz You know your pooches! To learn even more about our canine friends, check out Encarta's dog article. You got 5/10 correct. (Kelley's score)
1. The correct answer: C Dewclaw ***************************** That useless little toe is called the dewclaw, for reasons that remain obscure. A mandible is a part of an insect's mouth, or the lower jaw of a vertebrate, if you want to get technical. Only babies have baby toes.
2. The correct answer: A Kuvasz ***************************** This is the kuvasz, a shepard dog from Hungary. The kuvasz is roughly as large as a Great Pyrenees, but with shorter fur. The Samoyed has a white coat, like the Great Pyrenees and the kuvasz, but is much smaller.
3. The correct answer: A Foxes ***************************** Your dog Rover and all his doggie friends are closely related to foxes. Foxes and dogs are both part of the Dog Family, often called canids. Raccoons are part of the Procyonidae family, along with other odd animals like the Coati. Seagulls are not at all like dogs, or foxes.
4. The correct answer: B From Louis Dobermann, who developed the breed ****************************************** Louis Dobermann, a watchman, bred the Doberman in the late 19th century by mixing the German shepherd dog, the Rottweiler, the black and tan terrier, and the German pinscher.
5. The correct answer: C 101-102° <br>******************************** Dogs run a bit warmer than people. It's normal for a dog to have a temperature of 101° to 102°F, or about 38° to 39°C. Naturally, if Fido seems ill, take him to the vet!
6. The correct answer: B Sporting dog ************************************ Irish setters are sporting dogs, along with other types of setters, retrievers, spaniels, and pointers. Hunters use these dogs to help them track and retrieve during the hunt.
7. The correct answer: B Wheel dogs ********************************** The dogs closest to the sled are called wheel dogs because they must have the strength and agility to pull the sled around sharp turns, like wheels.
8. The correct answer: B Checkers ********************************* In 1952, Richard Nixon, then running for vice president on the ticket with Dwight Eisenhower, made an impassioned defense of gifts he had received to defray his expenses as a senator. The speech became known as the "Checkers Speech" because Nixon pointedly refused to return one of the gifts--a cocker spaniel named Checkers.
9. The correct answer: B Spotty ******************************* President Bush's spaniel is named Spotty. He shares the White House with his doggie pal, Barney, a Scottish terrier, and with India, a nice black cat. And, of course, with the First Family.
10. The correct answer: A Protection ************************************ Under the rules of the American Kennel Club, dogs can compete in five types of events: Conformation, Obedience, Tracking, Agility, and Performance.
