The Gift Called Percy
Ahhh Percy.. ( Sir Percival of Lancelot ) yes he's quite the character.. mind you when his spirit finally found me.. via haunting.. oh let me explain.. I frequently go to pet food warehouse type stores.. as I refuse to go to pet shops. Anyways one day I noticed on the bulletin board a rescue site.. featuring a basset hound.. which was unusual to see.. but I stopped to look at the posting.. at that time I had 9 cats and birds .. so I was not in the market for a dog.. couple of weeks went by.. but he remained in my thoughts.. I wasn't sure why.. well I was running a little late and went to yet another petfood store.. and there he was on a bulletin near the entrance door.. with tear off telephone numbers.. I could not understand WHY this dog was there.. so I decided to call.. he had been placed two days before.. but the lady shared his story with me anyways.. my heart breaking as she spoke and a realization why he was haunting me.. He had been a breeder with a long pedigree.. but at two developed epilepsy.
So was neutered and put on the treadmill as he no longer earned his keep. He was shuffled from Ontario to Quebec.. and three homes.. but ended up to much trouble for those that were impressed by his pedigree and looks.. The 7 X 30mg. phenobarbitol daily ( at different time intervals ) that's what he had been placed on.. this had changed his character immensly as well he had been taught no vocabulary or training or even as simple as fetching a ball.. so knowing how bassets can be that did NOT impress people.. well two days after I talked to the rescue lady.. again he was returned... feeling really defeated she called me...
My heart both soared and broke in an instant.. this poor spirit had been a cast off for the last time.. and I knew I was to be his forever home. I went and got him.. he was visably upset by all he had been through.. but after I brought him home I was determined to try to give him the life he so deserved... so my nature is one that believes in a holistic/naturopathic path .. so I threw myself into the challenge of getting him back a life.. I worked with the internet and a doctor friend of mine on getting him off the chemicals.. That took 3 months and alot of research but I found what I felt would work if he were to suffer a seizure during this weaning off time.. I stayed with him 24/7 for all this time... and nothing.. in the four years I've had him.. two petite mal seizures that I was able to stop at the onset.. causing no damage to him with the liquid remedy. So is he happy now.. I think so... was it meant to be.. Yes.. his haunting Me was both to our joy... I live with gratitude every day that he has been my gift..
Love the Big Oaf...
