Las Vegans Pitch In to Help Iraqi Police Dogs Jan. 13, 2005
Hundreds of donations poured into the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society after a U.S. army captain asked locals to help feed Iraqi police dogs in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, reported the Associated Press.
The officer told the Review-Journal that the 13 bomb-sniffing, Iraqi police dogs were starving because her unit was incapable of securing dry dog food. The only food available to the canine officers was table scraps and garbage.
The malnourished dogs are the only Iraqi police dogs trained to detect bombs, so keeping them healthy is important for the troops, the AP reported.
Soon after the article was published in the Las Vegas paper, donations started arriving at the shelter, reported the AP. The largest single donation was $5,000.
The shelter is currently looking at ways to ship pallets of dry dog food to Iraq.
