All Clear for 9/11 Dogs Midway Through MRI Study Jan. 10, 2005
Sixteen of 17 9/11 search and rescue dogs appear to be in good health and cancer-free, reported researchers involved in a five-year study of the dogs that served at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
The 17th dog died in June of a fast-moving bone tumor that veterinarians determined was not related to 9/11.
The study, being conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, The Iams Co., and the AKC Canine Health Foundation, is using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the dogs in an effort to detect any health problems related to inhaling potentially hazardous dust during the rescue work. The researchers believe the dogs would show signs of illness before humans who worked there, thus possibly providing an early warning to potential problems.
“Animals often display early signs of disease when exposed to the same carcinogens as humans,” said Liesa Stone, DVM, an Iams veterinarian. “The study allows us to track physical changes in the dogs, and may serve as an early warning of similar health problems in humans who worked at the sites.”<br>
